Miramar's defense crushes Piper

Miramar wrapped up a perfect district record with a 49-0 trouncing against visiting Piper on Friday night.
The Patriots defense was stifling, holding the hapless Bengals' offense to 84 yards of total offense.
Miramar receiver and recently selected Army All-American Ivan McCartney grabbed two touchdown passes including a highlight-reel, one-handed snag in the corner of the end zone. The story of the night, however, was a Miramar defense that forced five turnovers and scored a touchdown on a 24-yard fumble recovery by Sir Christian Gordon. The Patriots also had a 44-yard punt return for a touchdown by Malcolm Lewis.
Miramar quarterback Ryan Williams turned in an efficient performance completing 11 of 14 passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns. He was helped in the backfield by running back Jeremiah Hicks who rushed for 63 yards and two scores.
Stranahan 19, Northeast 9: Willie Tindal did it again. After leading Stranahan to the district championship last week over Hollywood Hills, Tindal led a six-play, 75-yard drive and found Anthony Drayton for a 16-yard touchdown with 32 seconds to play leading the Dragons to a 19-9 win at Northeast Friday night.
Trailing 9-6 with 1:52 to play, Tindal took over at the Stranahan 25-yard line following a Northeast punt. He had the task of having to march his team down the field against a Hurricanes defense that was swarming him all night and had held him to 92 total yards to that point.
Add 75 to that total as Tindal was 3 for 3 for 57 yards and had 18 yards rushing in the final drive to lead Stranahan (6-2) to its sixth straight win.
Renard Francois recovered a Northeast fumble on the final play of the game and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown for the final margin.
``Learning how to win is so important,'' Stranahan coach Joe Redmond said. ``Our team now has won six football games, and that hasn't been done here in a long time . . . I am really proud of our team for hanging in there, staying in there and playing.''
On the other side, it was Hurricanes coach Donnell Bennett whose team dominated pretty much the entire way only to let it get away in the final two minutes.
``That's tough, and to come out and have the game and come up short makes it even tougher. We can definitely take some good from it, watch the film and find out what are mistakes and correct them,'' Bennett said.
The Hurricanes' season isn't over. They host Taravella next Friday. A win and the Canes are in the playoffs. A loss could force a three-way tie for second if Deerfield beats Douglas.
Northeast jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second quarter only to see it disappear on Stranahan's first possession of the second half when Corey Tindal scored on a 4-yard touchdown run, but Northeast struck back on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Dennis Aaron to Richard Perez for a 9-6 lead with 10:30 to play.

Late Thursday -- Coral Glades 23, Cooper City 10: Coral Glades rode its defense to a home victory 23-10 over Cooper City. In the fourth with a 7-3 lead, the Jaguars' defense scored on a 30-yard fumble recovery by Brandon Haire, a safety, and a 21-yard interception return by Errol Parrish.
