WESTERN 21, SOUTH PLANTATION 14

Wheelock's 3 TDs power Western

Miami Herald Writer

Steve Wheelock ran for three first-half touchdowns and Western's defense snagged three interceptions in the final quarter as the Wildcats (4-4) remained mathematically alive for a 6A-District 10 playoff berth.

Western, now 1-2 in district play, needs to beat Piper next week and get help from a South Plantation win over Plantation to create a three-way tie for the second playoff berth behind Miramar. Plantation would clinch the berth with a win.

South Plantation's Johnny Marshall hit Robbie Anderson with a 27-yard TD that drew the Paladins (5-4) to 21-14 with 10:19 left. However, Western got interceptions from Brandon Harris, Dante Dorris and John Williams to abruptly thwart the final three possessions.

Meshach Waite rushed for 145 yards and a TD to propel South Plantation (1-2 district).

Wheelock finished with 59 yards on 18 carries for Western, bowling across the goal line on 2- and 9-yard runs in the first quarter and a 5-yarder just before halftime that proved the difference.

Quarterback Tyler Rue added 50 yards running the option and 164 through the air. Lee-Andrew Basanta accounted for 117 receiving yards, including two acrobatic grabs that helped set up Wheelock's first two TDs.

Cardinal Gibbons 37, Coral Springs 14: The Chiefs held the Colts (6-2) scoreless for three quarters and rolled to victory at home.

Dareyon Chance and Eric McLamore had two touchdowns each, and quarterback Chris Rapka threw for three touchdowns and 271 yards.

Cardinal Gibbons (6-2) has only lost to undefeated teams -- St. Thomas Aquinas and Blanche Ely.

``That Ely one still is bugging us,'' Gibbons coach Mike Morrill said. ``We played pretty well that day and didn't finish the job. If we can stay healthy, we're optimistic [about our chances].''

Chance opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run, and then McLamore sandwiched his two touchdown catches in between another Chance score.

The biggest play of the day for the Chiefs was a dump pass to McLamore that went 55 yards and gave Gibbons a 21-0 lead.

Chaminade-Madonna 55, Coral Shores 6: The Lions ran their record to 9-0 as the playoff-bound Lions crushed visiting Coral Shores.

The Lions racked up 347 yards in a game in which the running clock was in effect at four minutes remaining for the half.

The score was 41-0 at halftime as the Lions scored touchdowns in their first six possessions in the second half, and the defense held the Hurricanes to 27 total yards and three first downs, two coming by penalties.

Jerrard Randall threw four touchdown passes, three to Curt Evans. The Lions also had scoring runs from Charles Takeh (57 yards) and Jonathan Aiken (30). Each of those scoring drives was completed in four plays or less. Randall completed four of five passes for 167 yards before sitting out the second half.

In the second half, the Lions took advantage of two turnovers, converting them into running scores by Giovanni Giordano and Cody Edwards in runs of 4 and 54 yards, respectively.

The Hurricanes (0-8) avoided the shutout on a Courtney Dixon 1-yard run during the visitors' final possession.

Gulliver Prep 38, Somerset 12: With the win, the Raiders (5-1, 5-2) are in position to win the district title if they beat Pace next week. Somerset is 2-4, 2-6.

``We are getting ready for Pace,'' Coach Earl Sims said. ``We are preparing.''

Cedric Walkers' 45-yard punt return to the Somerset 10-yard line set up the Raiders' first score, a 3-yard run up the middle by Daryl Chestnutt with 4:15 in the first. Quarterback Michael Strauss missed on the two-point conversion attempt.

Gulliver extended its lead on the last play of the first period when Strauss rolled to his left and threw 35 yards across the middle to Max Grigio.
