Belen, Pines Charter advance
Belen is looking for another state championship, but its mission to another title started Wednesday night at the Pompano Beach Aquatic Center with a convincing District 12-2A championship. Pembroke Pines Charter's boys finished a distant second -- 601 points with 354.
Pembroke Pines Charter's girls squeaked out the district championship over Fort Lauderdale 458 to 440 points.
Leading the way for Belen was junior Andy Vazquez, who won the 200 free, 100 butterfly and led off the winning 200 and 400 free relay teams.
``Andy Vazquez was really big for us today,'' Belen coach Kirk Peppas said. ``He had a real nice meet. His 100 butterfly time was almost as good as what he did at state last year.''
Belen though has a real young swim team a lot of freshmen play an integral role, namely Julian Ballestas.
Ballestas won the 50 and 100 free. He also was the anchor on the winning 200 medley relay team and the second leg of the winning 400 relay team.
On the girls' side, Pembroke Pines Charter didn't clinch the title until it won the 400 free relay.
Courtney Marx led Pines Charter, winning the 200 free, 100 butterfly and was on the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams.
