Aquinas' Riggs second in track athlete of the year voting

Cody Riggs, who went undefeated in the 300 hurdles and led St. Thomas Aquinas to its second consecutive Class 3A state title, finished second in voting for the Florida Dairy Farmers Boys' Track Athlete of the Year award.

The top spot went to Tampa Chamberlain's Dentarius Locke, who won the 100 and 200 meters at the Class 4A finals. Locke received 11 first-place votes and outpointed Riggs 117-56.

Riggs, the Miami Herald's Broward Boys' Track Athlete of the Year, won the 300 hurdles and long jump and finished second in the 110 high hurdles at the 3A finals.

Alex Armenteros, St. Thomas Aquinas' first-year coach and Riggs' stepfather, took third in the Boys' Track and Field Coach of the Year voting behind Miami Pace's Anthony Walker (2A) and winner David Halliday of Flagler Palm Coast.

To no surprise, the Girls' Athlete of the Year award went to Miami Jackson freshman star Robin Reynolds, who finished with five first-place votes after sweeping the 100, 200, 400 and long jump at the Class 3A finals. Miami Southridge's Ebony Eutsey finished second with 68 points.

Miami Northwestern's Carmen Jackson, who led the Bulls to the girls' 4A state title, was named Girls' Track and Field Coach of the Year for the third time.

BROWARD ATHLETES EXCEL

A number of Broward athletes exceled last weekend at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C.

Cypress Bay's Austin Gamble, a Duke football recruit, finished third in the discus (196-1) and Pine Crest's Caitlin Schuessler (12-3.25) and Dillard's Tremaine Grant (54.19) each took fifth in the pole vault and 400 hurdles respectively.
