WINTER PARK -- Although Broward County didn't have any teams earn a team championship on Saturday at the Class 2A track and field state championship, it had three athletes capture individual titles.
North Broward Prep sprinter Ethan Grant narrowly edged Archbishop McCarthy's Daniel Salgado to win the 110-meter hurdles. Archbishop McCarthy junior Anthony Amadio leaped 14 feet into the air to capture the boys' pole vault title. Chaminade-Madonna's Gissell Warner defended her triple-jump championship with a meet-best jump of 40 feet, 4 ½ inches.
As a team, Archbishop McCarthy's girls finished in fourth place with 32 points, while winner Jacksonville Raines finished with 84. The Mavericks boys stayed competitive throughout the day and finished in third place with 42 points. Miami Monsignor Pace took home the boys' title with 82 points.
Archbishop McCarthy coach David DiNicola said he was proud of the way his teams performed.
''Overall, we exceeded expectations,'' DiNicola said. ``We took home 21 medals between the boys and the girls, which is great considering we've only won 16 medals in the past six years. The big thing for us was getting all of our young kids great experience at [state].''
The 110-meter hurdles race may have been the most dramatic of the day. North Broward's Grant and McCarthy's Salgado charged through the race -- side by side -- and appeared to cross the finish line simultaneously.
The two were so close, officials had to review pictures from the finish line.
After a 10-minute review, the officials deemed Grant the winner, confirming that he edged out Salgado by two thousandths of a second.
''It was a relief when [the officials] came out and said that I won the race,'' Grant said. ``I knew that it was close, and I know that [Salgado] is a great runner, plus I didn't run my best race. I wasn't leaving [Winter Park] without the state title.''
Two teammates battled for the boys' pole vault crown, McCarthy's Kyle Mailoux vaulted 13 feet, 6 inches to challenge teammate Amadio and Cardinal Mooney's Jordan Romecki. Amadio and Romecki both cleared 14 feet and competed in a tiebreaker.
In the tiebreaker, the bar was set at 15 feet. Though neither athlete cleared the bar, Amadio had the smallest fault-margin and declared the winner.
Warner's win in the triple jump came midway through the competition as she notched the championship-clinching jump in her third attempt.
