Florida Christian baseball beats St. Brendan, wins District 15-4A title

Brandon Chinea went 2 for 3 with a single, a triple and scored the only run the Florida Christian baseball team needed for the district championship victory.

The Patriots won 1-0 over St. Brendan for the District 15-4A title. Michael Campos (5-2) pitched seven innings and struck out six for the win. Michael Rodriguez went 1 for 3.

Florida Christian (20-7) will host Gulliver at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Crusaders (20-7) defeated Westminster Academy 12-2 in the District 14-3A final.

Colin Taylor (4-2) pitched four innings and had six strikeouts for the win. Danito Santiago went 2 for 3 with a double and 3 RBI.

Nova’s Daniela Veloza and Sam Sanchez were selected as the 2014 Academic All-Americans by the National Interscholastic Swimming Association.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Killian dominated in its three-game tournament at Coral Park.

In the first match, Jack Harris had 11 kills and 10 digs to lead the Cougars to a 25-22, 25-17 victory over Miami High. Jason Harris added 25 assists.

Killian defeated Ferguson 25-10, 25-16 in the second match. Christopher Barut had five kills, and Jose Martinez had four kills. Julian Xuarez registered six digs.

Killian defeated host Coral Park in the final match 25-18, 25-22. Mike Roman led the way with 14 kills and two blocks. Josue Espinoza added five kills, 24 assists and 10 digs. Andres Carvajal registered six kills and 15 digs. Eddy Moreira had 18 digs.

The Cougars improved to 18-5 record.

• Killian d. Miami High 25-22, 25-17: Jack Harris 11 kills, 10 digs. Jason Harris 25 assists.

• Killian d. Ferguson 25-10, 25-16: Jose Martinez 4 kills. Christopher Barut 5 kills. Julian Xuarez 6 digs.

• Killian d. Coral Park 25-18, 25-22: Jack Harris 12 kills. Damian Horton 3 kills. William Ortiz 5 digs. KIL 18-5.

• Braddock defeated Hialeah Gardens 25-21, 12-25, 16-14. Rensel Cabrera had seven kills and six digs. Gustavo Menendez had eight kills and seven digs. Angel Jover added 20 assists.

In the Bulldogs’ victory over Hialeah, Cabrera led again with 11 kills and six digs. Alvaro Larralde had six kills and two blocks. Jover registered 20 assists.

•  Braddock d. Hialeah Gardens 25-21, 12-25, 16-14: Rensel Cabrera 7 kills, 6 digs. Gustavo Menendez 8 kills, 7 digs. Angel Jover 20 assists.

• Braddock d. Hialeah 25-14, 25-13: Rensel Cabrera 11 kills, 5 digs. Alvaro Larralde 6 kills, 2 blocks. Angel Jover 22 assists.

• Florida Christian d. Trinity Christian Academy 25-15, 25-17, 25-21: Willmar Gonzalez 13 kills, 8 digs. Ace Fernandez 17 kills, 14 digs, 6 points. Johnny Benitez 7 aces, 28 assists, 4 digs, 12 points. FC 12-10.
