Entering the district playoffs winless in the month of April, Mater Academy’s baseball team desperately needed a victory.
The Lions got it convincingly shutting out Doral Academy 7-0 in a District 16-6A semifinal at Belen Jesuit that moved them into the regional playoffs for the second consecutive season.
Senior pitcher Mike Mediavilla led the effort pitching a two-hitter and going 3 for 3 with two doubles at the plate.
Mater Academy (14-8) will try to win its second consecutive district title Thursday at 4 p.m. when it plays Belen. The Wolverines have defeated Mater twice this season.
“As a team we’ve been struggling so it definitely feels great to get back in the win column,” Mater Academy coach Mike DiRosa said. “[Mediavilla] is a guy we rely on greatly on the mound, but it was a team win with every pulling their weight and we need that this time of year.”
Aside from a forfeit win against Northwestern, the Lions had lost all five games they had played since a victory over South Dade in the Hall of Fame Classic on March 27.
Mater Academy had beaten Doral (17-9) twice during the regular season, however.
A solo home run by junior Deyvid Silva got things going for the Lions in the second inning.
Mater would break the game open in the bottom of the fifth with three runs to take a 5-0 lead as Silva hit a sacrifice fly and sophomore Alex Rodriguez singled in a run. Silva finished with three RBI.
Mediavilla kept Doral scoreless by striking out five to improve to 5-3 so far this season.
“Today, we were finally able to execute some good situational hitting,” DiRosa said.
