It wasn’t perfection, but the Ransom Everglades girls left no doubt that the state Class 1A tennis trophy was coming back to Coconut Grove.
With seniors Allegra Hanlon and Claudia McKenzie leading a morning blitz Thursday that captured four of five singles divisions, the Raiders left their nearest pursuers in the dust to claim their second state title in three years.
The task took little more than two hours, with Hanlon providing the clinching point by winning the No. 1 singles crown with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Tampa Prep’s Paige Leavy.
“It wasn’t even about me [Thursday],” Hanlon said. “It was about my team and clinching the state championship for my team. That makes me feel incredible.”
McKenzie, Daniela Lopez and Heather Boehn also won their singles brackets as the Raiders followed up on Wednesday’s perfect 12-point performance.
Hanlon later teamed up with Lopez in a doubles comeback that left them with 19 points.
Delray Beach American Heritage was a distant second with 10 points, falling to Ransom in two of three singles finals. Windemere Prep was next with nine points.
“We came out extremely focused,” coach Peter Lehmann said. “We knew what the number was to clinch this thing, and the girls didn’t waste any time. They got it done in a hurry.”
The Raiders needed just four points to shut the door on American Heritage’s hope of back-to-back titles. There also was the higher goal of sweeping all seven divisions — a perfect score of 21 points.
That fell by the wayside when Lindsey Mendelson ran into a strong outing from Heritage’s Kasey Moore in the No. 4 singles final. But the other singles results were enough to put the Raiders over the top.
Even with another loss in the No. 2 doubles final, Ransom’s 19-point output has been exceeded just nine times since the girls’ tournament broke into separate classes 30 years ago.
“I can tell you that this is the best girls’ team I’ve ever coached,” Lehmann said.
On the boys’ side, MAST Academy’s doubles team of Fred Albion and Richard Torres captured the individual crown in a streaky 6-4, 0-6, 10-7 final over Andrew Dykeman and Joseph Brander of Boca Raton St. Andrew’s.
Albion and Torres trailed 4-1 in the opening set, then won the next five games before getting blanked in the second set. The MAST duo then won the first four points of the tiebreaker, lost the next six and won four in a row to finally gain the upper hand.
“We’re just happy we pulled it out in the end,” said Torres, a sophomore who also reached the semifinals of the individual singles.
MAST will play for the overall doubles crown Friday against Elio Levi and Wyatt Lovera of Port St. Lucie Morningside, which rolled to its first team title.
