After dropping a tough District 15-8A final to South Miami, Ferguson will now get a shot at revenge when it matters most.
The visiting Falcons took down District 16 winner South Dade 55-37 on Thursday in a Region 4-8A quarterfinal to advance to face the Cobras in their building.
“It’s always fun playing South Miami,” said guard Annie Osceola, who led Ferguson with 20 points. “They beat us in our gym, so we want to beat them at their gym.”
Kamaria Johnson had 13 points and 12 rebounds. Tabitha Gonzalez scored 10 points and Nachalie DeJesus added 11 points and seven assists.
Osceola was able to drive to the basket against a physical Buccaneers defense.
“That’s what she needs to do for us. She sets the tone for us,” Ferguson coach Gabriel Lazo said. “When Annie has a good offensive game, we’re all going to have a good game.”
Ferguson (21-6) split regular season meetings with South Miami before falling in the district final.
South Dade (18-3) can’t walk away with its head down. The Buccaneers have had some difficult seasons where simply scoring in double digits was a successful night, but have recently gotten it turned around under coach Larry Hicks to the point where they won the District 16-8A title this season.
Victoria Williams had 10 points, and Jaddah Knight registered nine to go with her 12 rebounds for South Dade.
