Rivals Ransom Everglades and Gulliver Prep proved to be evenly matched in a 0-0 tie Tuesday night at Robert E. Walker Field.
Both teams scored goals that were called back on whistles. Gulliver (9-1-1), which held a 16-15 shot advantage, controlled the pace in the first half.
Adriano Castro’s free kick from 25 yards out in the seventh minute hit off the crossbar. Eight minutes later goaltender Jake Deuel blocked Castro’s shot after he beat two defenders to the ball. Duele made another nice save on a free kick by Eduardo Garcia-Montes.
“He came up big,” Ransom coach David Villano said of Deuel. “I think there were some nerves in the first half. There are a lot of guys on this squad who hadn’t played a big varsity match before. They just settled in, but that’s when you need guys like your senior goalkeeper.”
Ransom (9-0-3) bounced back in the second half, creating several opportunities of its own.
Nic Murphy’s free kick from 50 yards took a bounce in front of goalkeeper Esteban Sapentnizky before sailing just over the net 50 minutes in. Off a corner, Sapentnizky used his reflexes to corral a rebound on the line six minutes later.
Tuesday marked the only regular-season meeting between the teams. Last year, Ransom and Gulliver played each other four times. Gulliver won both regular-season contests, while Ransom captured the district title. Gulliver got its revenge in a 2-1 (OT 1-0) victory in the regional semifinal en route to a state final appearance.
With the teams now in different districts, they would not face each other again until the second round of the postseason, if they continue to win.
“It’s a regular season game, but it’s always a big rivalry with Ransom,” Gulliver coach Matias Asorey said. “It sets the stage for a nice game in the playoffs.”Mater Academy 7, Westland Hialeah 0:
