Sunset’s Katherine Espinosa fell just three assists shy of a quadruple-double in the Knights 60-44 win over Miami Springs on Thursday.
Espinosa scored 38 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, recorded 10 steals and added seven assists to round out possibly the most complete game you could play.
“She plays way above the level than anyone we compete against,” said coach Juan Diaz. “She’s an exceptional athelete and does everything well.”
Espinosa’s exceptional performance is no fluke, either, the junior is averaging 26.1 points per game this season and averaged 21 points per game last year.
“She has great vision, great hands,” Diaz said. “She’s a natural scorer and our team is getting better because of her.”
What’s the secret behind Espinosa’s superior play? She often matches up against boys during pick-up games at LA Fitness.
“I think she can play on boys’ teams,” Diaz said. “She plays at the gym and gets better by playing against the boys.”
The Knights (2-8) are a year removed from an 0-15 season. Espinosa played 10 games on that team and instead of ditching the Knights, she returned for her junior year.
“Her personality is wonderful, she is very likeable. She showed her teammates and school her loyalty,” Diaz said. “She loves to play, she’s happy to be out there.”
According to Diaz, everything Espinosa puts her mind to she ends up being the best at. That trait is something Diaz hopes will get her more recognition and potentially land her on a college campus.
“I see her as a Division I player,” Diaz said.Ferguson 71, Coral gables 33: FER (8-1): CG (3-4): Lourdes 54, Southwest 21: LOU (6-2): Edison 57, Mater Lakes 14: EDI (5-3):
