Steven Claude wiggled wide and caught a screen pass and ripped up the Schlechter Stadium grass for an 80-yard touchdown in Champagnat’s victory Friday at Glades Day in the region 4-2A final.

“Last year we were 2-9 and we never want that feeling,” Lions coach Mike Tunsil said. “We lost to them and they rubbed it in last year. We are working hard.”

Claude had four catches for 160 yards for the Lions (12-0). Lions quarterback Kato Nelson, who was 10-of-17 for 240 yards and had two scores, then hit Claude up the seam for a 40-yard touchdown and a 12-0 lead at 8:50 in the second quarter.

Jason Williams and Antoine Webster each had interceptions in the victory. Travonte Valentine dominated the defensive line and forced one of Glades Day’s three fumbles.

Champagnat faces Indian Rocks Christian in the state semifinals.
