Senior All-American quarterback Treon Harris played Saturday for the first time in more than a month.
It took only four throws to shake the rust off.
Harris, who entered the game on the Tornadoes’ second drive, completed his fourth pass for the first of two touchdown passes that helped Booker T. Washington beat Belle Glade Glades Central 40-18 in a Region 4-4A semifinal at Traz Powell Stadium.
Harris completed 7 of 17 passes for 122 yards before exiting midway through the third quarter as he played for the first time since Oct. 12 after injuring his ankle.
Never miss a local story.
“I feel a lot better and I’ve been trying to keep moving every day to keep it that way,” Harris said. “The rest really helped. The rehab has helped me feel a lot stronger.”
With the FSU commit healthy, Booker T. (11-0), the consensus top-ranked team in the nation, has all the key pieces it needs for next week’s long-anticipated showdown with Davie University School.
The Tornadoes, who won their 23rd consecutive game, face the defending Class 3A state champion Suns (9-2) Friday in the regional final at Nova High in Davie.
“Practice has gone well for him, and it was good to see him have his mobility back,” Booker T. coach Tim “Ice” Harris said. “We dropped a few balls that could have sparked the rhythm earlier, but it was good to see.”
Harris’ first offensive series ended with a negative result.
Evading Glades Central’s pass rush, Harris heaved a ball out of bounds and was penalized for intentional grounding in the end zone to put the Raiders ahead 2-0.
Booker T. regained possession shortly after, however.
Harris capped the drive by throwing a perfect pass over the middle to Terrawn McPhee for a 38-yard touchdown that began a surge of 40 unanswered points.
In the second quarter, Harris connected with Shaquille Green on a fade pass to the corner of the end zone from 8 yards to give the Tornadoes a 19-2 lead.
“In the beginning, I felt a little off after being out for a few weeks,” Harris said. “But I talked to my guys and we just started playing football.”
Booker T.’s starting defense, most of which exited the game with a 40-2 lead in the third quarter, put together another stingy performance. Tevin Evans returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown.
Running back Krondis Larry made a big play on special teams as well, blocking a punt and recovering it in the end zone for a touchdown. Mark Walton led the running game, scoring two touchdowns.
