North Miami head coach Ed Williams and his Pioneers players were a happy bunch following an impressive 38-14 dispatching of Hialeah on Saturday night at North Miami Stadium.
And with the win, North Miami (6-1, 3-0 District 13-8A) is clearly in the driver’s seat to capture its first district title and playoff berth since 1999. Hialeah (4-3, 2-1 District 13-8A) will prepare for a showdown with North Miami Beach in two weeks that will likely determine the runner-up spot.
“Just a big-time night for us,” Williams said. “There was a lot on the line and the kids went out there and delivered. Now we have to keep our eye on the ball and keep fighting hard each week.”
Quarterback Hilton Joseph completed 17 of 30 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns. The biggest was a 29 yarder to Victor Sam just before halftime to put North Miami back up 17-14 at the half.
Meanwhile the North Miami defense harrassed Hialeah quarterback Alin Edouard all night, sacking him six times and returned two fumble recoveries for scores.
“All we wanted to do was come out here and get a little respect tonight and we just went out and took what we felt was ours,” said defensive end Markes Scott who recorded two of those sacks and scooped up a T-Bred fumble in the fourth quarter and rumbled 43 yards for a score to complete the scoring. “The more we keep on grinding the more we’ll keep on shining.”
“We just kept playing hard and that’s all I ever ask them to do,” said Williams when asked the key to the big win. “Our goal from the start has been to not only win the district title but keep moving on from there and that’s what we intend to do.”
