Southwest senior Alec Sanchez needed a strike on his final roll of the 10th frame to secure his team’s victory at Friday’s Youth Fair tournament at Bird Bowl.

In a best three-out-of-five Baker format his strike in the decisive fifth set gave the Eagles a 193-189 advantage over South Dade, capturing the championship one year after they finished as runner-ups.

“I wasn’t really nervous, I just really wanted to get the strike for the team and win,” said Sanchez, who finished eighth in the individual standings. “I knew without the strike we would probably lose. All or nothing.”

TERRA, meanwhile, took both the girls’ individual and team titles.

The Wolves swept the Baker set against Ferguson, 139-124, 160-138, 158-146. Senior Tori Burstein bowled a 574 — 30 points higher than second place — for the individual hardware.

“She did a great job today,” TERRA coach Ed Garland said of Burstein. “When you get down to the baker set it has to be a team effort. Our girls, especially No. 4 and 5, came through for us and made some spares. Our co-anchor girl Samantha Boellard iced the games for us.”

Miami Christian’s Alex Yaniz recorded a 690 for the boys’ individual championship.
