It took a sudden-death playoff for Columbus golfer Juan Yumar to secure his first GMAC championship last season.

Yumar won it much more comfortably the second time around.

Yumar shot a 5-under-par 67 to his secure the GMAC individual boys’ golf title for the second consecutive season Thursday afternoon at the Redland Golf and Country Club.

Yumar’s efforts helped Columbus win the boys’ team title for the third year in a row with an overall score of 301.

Coral Reef’s Lauren Eustace shot an 86 to secure the girls’ individual championship and help the Barracudas shoot a team score of 391 to win the girls’ team title.

Eustace beat the rest of the field by seven strokes, finishing ahead of Coral Gables’ Marisa Urrutia and Kelly Pearson, who came in second and third. Coral Reef’s Leia Schwartz finished fourth with a 96.

Yumar’s effort was one of the best performances by a GMAC champion in recent memory. At one point during his round, Yumar was maintaining a 7-under score.

It was another solid performance for a Columbus team hoping to make an impact at the state tournament this season. The Explorers have also won the Westminster Christian and Youth Fair Invitational.

Yumar finished four strokes ahead of teammate Julio Betancourt’s 71.

Yumar may not have been involved in a playoff Thursday, but Coral Reef’s Zack Granoff won a scorecard playoff over TERRA’s Kevin Fertel, Palmetto’s Daniel Ledbetter and South Dade’s Kevin Perham, who all shot 74.

Urrutia beat Pearson for second on the girls’ side, also on a scorecard playoff.
