In a rematch of last year’s Class 8A regional quarterfinal, South Dade cruised past Varela to remain unbeaten at Harris Field.
After the Vipers (2-2) trimmed a first-quarter deficit to 14-7, the Buccaneers (5-0) scored 33 unanswered points the rest of the game. They led 41-7 at halftime.
South Dade’s quick-strike offense notched four touchdown drives of just two plays.
Senior quarterback Kahlil Render went 8 for 14 with 213 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Render connected with five receivers. Junior running back Johnnie Hankins scored on a pair of touchdown runs. Senior Denis Zimero and junior Hans Supre each had a rushing touchdown.
The defense gave up just 81 total yards. Varela’s lone score came with 1:18 to go in the first when junior quarterback Darius Flowers found junior Andrew Williams for a 35-yard touchdown.
The Buccaneers beat the Vipers, 29-16, in last year’s first round of the postseason before falling to Killian, 24-0, the next week.
“I’m pleased. As I said at the beginning of the season we’re a work in progress,” South Dade coach Nathaniel Hudson said. “I like where we’re at right now on both sides of the ball.”
