Varela, a playoff team last season after a runner-up finish to Southwest in District 15-8A, began district play in 2013 with a win, downing Sunset at Tropical Park.
Christopher McWilliams ran for two touchdowns and Varela, as a team, ran its Wing-T offense to the tune of 285 yards on 41 rushes.
McWilliams, who plays both sides of the ball for the Vipers (2-1, 1-0), made the most of his six carries, rushing for 62 yards and the two scores — one from 15 yards out in the first quarter and a 19-yard scamper in the fourth that effectively put Sunset (0-3, 0-1) away.
