Carolina Garrett remembers when winning just a dual meet was a big deal for the Ransom Everglades girls’ golf team.

The Raiders are scoring bigger victories these days.

Garrett, a junior, helped Ransom sweep the team and individual championships of the Youth Fair Invitational on Wednesday afternoon at Country Club of Miami.

Garrett has golfed for Ransom since she was in sixth grade and shot a 70 to secure the individual title.

The Raiders shot an impressive score of 306 as a team, finishing ahead of runner-up Gulliver’s 351.

Carrollton’s Tanya Eathakotti defeated Gulliver’s Michelle Rodriguez for second place in a playoff after each shot a 75.

Ransom’s victory snapped Carrollton’s nine-year streak of having either the team or individual champion in the event. Ransom’s Chloe Horton (76) and Phoebe Beber-Frankel (78) rounded out the individual top five.

“As a sixth-grader, it was a little intimidating being the No. 1 player on the team and being younger than all the other girls,” said Garrett, who was born in Bolivia and plays golf for her home country’s national team. “The idea of us being No. 1 in the county is great because we’ve all seen ourselves fail and accomplish while growing up together.”

Ransom Everglades qualified for state as a team each of the past two seasons, finishing runners-up in their Class 1A region behind Plantation American Heritage.

This season Ransom is eyeing the regional title and a higher finish at state following Heritage’s move up to Class 2A.

With several of their players capable of shooting in the 70s, the Raiders believe they have the ability to finish this season strong.

“I think our dedication will take us to wherever we want to go,” Garrett said.
