Columbus pair ties at Youth Fair Invitational as golf round shortened

Columbus’ Juan Yumar and Rafael Martinez each know what it’s like to win golf tournaments.

But Tuesday afternoon, inclement weather forced them to split the Youth Fair Invitational boys’ championship honors.

Yumar and Martinez each shot 35 over nine holes at the Country Club of Miami to finish tied for first place individually.

“We’ll probably have a playoff for fun [Wednesday] or later this week to settle the score,” Columbus coach Mike Marinelli said.

The team title, however, was not in dispute after weather forced the normally 18-hole tournament to end early and be scored over nine holes.

Columbus edged Ransom Everglades by three strokes 150-153 to win the title. Palmetto finished third after shooting 154. Palmetto’s D.J. Burnham and Ransom’s Phillip Straus finished tied for third individually with a score of 36.

The Explorers were coming off a runner-up finish at the Ida Baker Bulldog Invitational last week at which they shot an impressive 292 as a team, second only to defending state champion Lakewood Ranch.

“It was nice to see us put up a good number in spite of the weather conditions,” Marinelli said. “The [Ida Baker] tournament was huge for us in terms of confidence.”

Team scores: 1. Columbus 150; 2. Ransom Everglades 153; 3. Palmetto 154; 4. Belen 158; 5. Gulliver 159; 6. Miami Springs 161.

Individual results: 1. Juan Yumar (COL) and Rafael Martinez (COL) 35; 3. D.J. Burnham (Pal) and Phillip Straus (RE) 36; 5. Patrick McGrath (RE) and Zach Granoff (CR) 37; 7. Tomas Nieves (CG), Eddie Martinez (COL), Michael Lefkowitz (GUL), Kyle Safreed (MS), Pedro Gomez (BEL) and Daniel Tannenbaum (RE) 38.
