It only took two plays for Doral Academy to reach the end zone in Friday’s game against visiting Mater Academy.
After that, Mater made sure the Firebirds did not score until there was one minute left in the game.
Mater quarterback Brian Guerra completed 10 of 13 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns, Steven Rodriguez added a receiving and a rushing touchdown, and the Lions (2-1) cruised past Doral 36-12 for the Charter Bowl trophy.
After Doral (0-3) scored the opening touchdown, Guerra led Mater to all of its points without resistance before lifting key players in the fourth quarter.
Joseph Barrocas, Kevin Sanchez and Daniel Doriscar each had a touchdown for the Lions, playing under first-year coach Javier Valdez.
“He just brought some excitement that we needed,” Barrocas said of Valdez. “His scheme just fits us.”
Andres Perez scored Doral’s first touchdown on a 69-yard run and finished with 121 yards on eight carries. Jonathon Tefel added the game’s final score, finishing with 48 yards on nine carries. Andres Pineda added 16 carries for 74 yards in the second half to help the Firebirds, who were plagued by 12 penalties for 85 yards.
Mater won the Charter Bowl trophy, played for between the schools since 2004, for the first time in three seasons.
