A high snap and subsequent fumble on third down from Deerfield Beach's 35-yard line ended Plantation's comeback with under a minute to go as the host Bucks beat the Colonels 17-14 in a Class 8A regional quarterfinal.
The Colonels (8-3), the District 12-8A runners-up, also missed a game-tying 31-yard field goal early in the fourth. Their defense limited the Bucks to just two second-half first downs to trim a 17-6 deficit.
Deerfield Beach (10-1), the District 11-8A champs, has won seven in a row. Senior quarterback Teddrick Moffett and junior Jerry Jeudy connected for a pair of touchdowns in the first half. Senior Manasseh Smith nailed a 48-yard kick with 2:18 before the half to cap his team's scoring.
Jerry Jeudy: Caught 10 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns from 49 and 5 yards out. Both came in the first half.
Jordan Johnson: Ran for a game-high 188 yards with two scores on 24 carries.
THEY SAID IT
“It means a lot. Our team is steady growing, steady gelling. Plantation is a hell of a football team. They're coached well, they play hard. For our program trying to get back to where we want to be on top, it means a lot to beat an established program with a great head football coach.” — Deerfield coach Jevon Glenn
