With the game and playoff hopes hanging by a thread, Taravella coach Dan Marguriet knew his team would not back down.
It scratched and clawed all night long against Douglas (6-2, 3-2 District 11-8A), and at the end of the night came away with a much-needed 43-39 victory on the road.
Taravella quarterback Adam Sinclair found running back Jawanza Evans-Morris for a touchdown with 25 seconds left, giving Taravella the win.
After trading touchdowns for the first three quarters, the Trojans (3-5, 2-3) led 36-32, thanks to 276 total yards and three touchdowns from Evans-Morris.
The Trojans, trying to ice the game, drove down the field and took nearly eight minutes off the clock but couldn’t get the insurance touchdown.
The Eagles drove right back down the field with 1:23 left in the game when quarterback Blake Israel found Tate Lehtio for a 55-yard touchdown to give Douglas a 39-36 lead.
“It was definitely a roller-coaster game,” Marguriet said. “Thankfully, we had just enough to stop them there at the end. It was just a great high school football game.”
Douglas running back Khalil Herbert had 197 total yards and three touchdowns in the loss.
