Boyd Anderson’s Phillip Lee finished second in the 3A boys’ high jump but his more celebrated teammate, Javon Patterson watched his hopes of a 800 meters title vanish when Chiles’ Avery Bartlett walked Patterson down in the last 10 meters to win in 1:52.27. Patterson, who came in ranked No. 7 in the nation (1:52.04) appeared on his way to victory after taking the lead with 150 meter left only to watch the long-striding Bartlett surge past him.
The Miami Northwestern girls team was never challenged in the girls 3A race to earn its 11th state title, No. 1 all time.
It was heartbreak for the South Plantation boys 400 meter relay team, which was on the brink of repeating as 4A state champions only to have its anchor leg fall down at the finish line, opening the door for Dr. Phillips to win in 41.49.
