Anna Smith-Johnson scored three goals as St. Thomas Aquinas put a halt to Fort Lauderdale’s improbable turnaround season in Thursday’s District 10 title game at Fort Lauderdale.

The Raiders (8-13) advanced to Tuesday’s FHSAA regional play-in matchup against St. Andrews in Boca Raton.

After finishing 1-16 a year ago, the Flying L’s ended their best season ever at 10-2 under fifth-year coach Debbie Cavanaugh.

Fort Lauderdale had a 1-0 lead in the first quarter on a Hayley Hill goal off an assist from sister Emily. The Raiders scored the next three goals and never looked back after that, avenging a 6-3 loss to Fort Lauderdale last month.

Gaby Grund, Paloma Schafer and Mimi Nakis also scored for the Raiders.

“The difference this time was the defensive pressure the girls put on [Fort Lauderdale],” Raiders coach Gary Besbris said.

Goalie Demie Doherty turned away eight of 12 shots for the winners.

Hayley Hill and Brittani Lancaster each scored twice to lead Fort Lauderdale.

In the boys’ district final, St. Thomas Aquinas completed the sweep, building a 9-2 halftime lead to cruise to a 16-7 victory over Cardinal Gibbons.

Max Lettau led the Raiders (20-2) with seven goals. Eric Goldenberg and Parker Strickman each added three goals.

The Chiefs finished their season at 16-5.
