Three red-hot St. Thomas Aquinas relay teams, led by their national-record setting 800-meter relay team of Kendall Ellis, Krystal Sparling, Khalifa St. Fort and Diamond Spaulding, will see how they stack up in less familiar sprint races at the Fort Lauderdale City Championships at Carter Park on Tuesday.
Sparling, the nation’s leader in the 200 meters (23.35) and No. 4 (11.43, wind-aided) in the 100 will compete in the 400, along with Spaulding, who ranks No. 3 nationally in the 200 (23.81).
Ellis, meanwhile, the nation’s gold standard in the 400 (53.92) will see how her added strength in the quarter mile translates to the 100.
Aquinas coach Alex Armenteros is using this late-season twist to keep his squad sharp for the Florida Relays this weekend.
At the Texas Relays on Saturday, Aquinas made its case as the nation’s top girls’ sprint corps by taking two of three relays against perennial national power Long Beach Poly.
The icing on the cake came in the 800-meter relay where Sparling, Ellis, St. Fort and Spaulding displayed incredible stick handling to set a national record in 1:33.47.
In the 1,600-meter relay, Ellis, Narinah Jean-Baptiste, Sparling and Spaulding took over the nation’s top time by clocking 3:38.26.
The lone blemish for Aquinas came in the 400-meter relay when Long Beach Poly clocked a U.S.-leading 45.73 to edge the Raiders team of Sparling, Spaulding, St. Fort and Kristen Laidlaw (45.75) in a photo finish.
