Cobras and Bulls take Disney track titles

Surging Boyd Anderson tuned up for the BCAA Track and Field championships next week by capturing the Disney Track and Field Showcase boys’ title at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee on Saturday. The Cobras clinched the title 55-51 over Stephenson by winning the 1,600 meter relay in 3:23.12.

Javon Patterson kick-started the Cobras’ victory by winning the 800 in 1:54.70. Westminster Academy’s Brandon Bejarano, who won the 2,000 steeplechase, followed in 1:57.79 with Pines Charter’s Andrew Iglesias fourth in 1:58.53. Phillip Lee also helped the Cobras’ cause by winning the high jump in a career-best 6-7 (Florida No. 5) and placing fourth in the triple jump.

Meanwhile, Chaminade Madonna made some noise of its own when Gino Brown won the triple jump and Brandon Williams won the 3,200 in 10:36.86.

Westminster Academy’s Andrew James put on a show in the sprints, beating West Broward’s Isaiah Taylor for the 200 meter title in 21.61. Taylor, however, got the better of James in the 100, where he won in 10.88. James finished second in the 100 in 10.91. Perennial state power Miami Northwestern proved the class of the girls’ competition, cruising to the title with 92 points.

Charlease Rodgers dominanted the hurdles, winnin the 100 hurdles in 14.84 and returning to claim the 300 hurdles in 44.60. Rodgers’ teammate Ariyanna Val finished third in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Boyd Anderson’s Chya-Joi Staton won the 200 in 24.89 and won the 400 in 56.03. Westminster Academy’s Denise Spann finished fourth in the 200 and second in the 400.
