Bri’nesha Powell was just a little girl when Deerfield Beach was winning the second of its back-to-back state titles. But she has not forgotten where the Bucks once were. And she wants Deerfield to return to its former status as a Broward County power.
The Bucks (18-8) hope they took that first step Thursday when they knocked off host Cypress Bay, 60-48. Powell, a senior guard, had 17 points and four steals to lead Deerfield. Liz Wright finished with a game-high 22 for the Lightning, (23-3).
“We remember when they won state championships,” Powell said. “We want to make history again at Deerfield.”
Another test looms for the Bucks as they face Douglas, the team that beat them for the district title, in the regional semifinals.
“It’s a great win even greater that we get another chance to face Douglas,” Powell added.
It was a back-and-forth battle in the first half as neither team led by more than three points. Wright, one of only two seniors on the Lightning roster, was the catalyst with 19 points in the opening half.
But the second half was a completely different story as the Bucks’ aggressive half-court defense forced 11 turnovers and Cypress Bay’s shooting went cold.
The Lightning hit just two shots from the field in the second half, and Wright had just three points — all free throws — before fouling out. The Lightning also hit just 53 percent of their free throws.
“We had open looks, we just shot poorly,” Lightning coach Scott Selvidge said. “Kudos to Deerfield. They gave us a lot of problems tonight.”
Tiara Walker added 13 for the Bucks while freshman Jessie Lizano contributed 15 for Cypress Bay, including a trio of three-pointers.
