Dillard tops No. 1 American Heritage

Dillard stormed into the American Heritage gym on Monday and knocked off the FABC-SourceHoops Class 5A No. 1 Patriots 83-75 behind a game-high 28 points from Tyson Grace.

Grace pinned the first District 16-5 loss on the Patriots (14-3), with 14 first half points, including 10 straight in the second quarter, to stake No. 3 Dillard (14-4) to a 38-31 halftime lead.

Dillard also fed off the energy of high-flying 6-5 forward Keion Farrington (13 points), who provided the highlight of the first half with a two handed dunk off an inbounds play to pull Dillard within 24-22 with 5:20 left in the second quarter.

That sparked a 12-2 run, highlighted by Grace rattling off 10 consecutive points, including a three-pointer, three-point play before coming up with a steal and feeding Farrington for another thunderous dunk for a 38-28 Dillard lead. Arthur ‘Rico’ Kennedy had 14 points and Cedric Wright added 10 points for Dillard.

Heritage guard Keyshawn Evans came alive for 11 of his 16 points in the third quarter to pull the Patriots within 56-42 with 31 seconds left in the third period. But Marquez Smith had a steal and layup and Grace followed with a 15-foot jumper for a 68-56 lead with 5:25 left.

Justin Massey had 18 points, Hunter Osceola had 16 points and Drake Lamont added 10 points for the Patriots.

Monarch boys’ soccer coach Steve Lorenc collected his 400th career win on Monday afternoon after the Knights’ 8-1 victory over West Boca on Monday afternoon. His overall career record now stands at 400-153-70.

Rodrigo Silva led the Knights with two goals and three assists. Gian Scalise had two goals and an assist. Kevian Ferraz had a goal and an assist. Chris Machado and Daniel Delgado each scored one goal.

Gustavo Horta scored a goal in a loosing effort for the Bulls.

Monarch improves to a 9-7-2 record.
