The Sagemont girls’ basketball team snapped Zion Lutheran’s eight-game winning streak with a 79-66 victory Wednesday night in Sagemont’s home opener.

Zion Lutheran (8-1) had defeated Sagemont in the Coconut Creek preseason tournament 73-58.

“Our girls wanted to seek some revenge from having lost in preseason and they fought hard because it was our first home game,” assistant coach Michael Smith said.

Sagemont won with a team effort as the Lions (4-2) recorded 18 total assists.

Erica Correa, a Lewis University commit, led the Lions with 14 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and a block. Kelsey Marshall followed with 14 points, and seven rebounds.

It was a back-and-forth game as the Lions led the first quarter 17-16 and then again at the half, 41-40. But Sagemont pulled away in the second half.

“The way Zion Lutheran plays transition basketball up and down the court is impressive and we were able to transition with them; it was like a track meet,” Smith said.

The Lions, who won a state championship in Class 3A three years, are looking to regain the title from Miami Country Day, which Zion lost to by two points in the state ttile game last season.
