Last week’s best Broward performances


Led by Class 4A state individual girls’ champion Alexa Cruz and Manny Velasquez, a fourth-place finisher in the boys’ 4A race, the St. Thomas Aquinas cross-country team, coached by Trish Butler, pulled off a rare sweep of the boys’ and girls’ team state titles.


Brianna Buckley, Cypress Bay, girls’ golf: The daughter of former NFL standout defensive back Terrell Buckley shot a 1-under par 71, highlighted by a hole-in-one, to finish tied for ninth overall and lead the Lightning to the Class 3A state title.

Jordy Groters, University School, boys’ swimming: Groters won the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke at the Class 1A state finals.

Brandon Powell, Deerfield Beach, football: Powell rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns, including a 50-yard scamper, that helped the Bucks (10-0) beat St. Thomas Aquinas 22-7 and clinch the Bucks’ third undefeated regular season.

Julia Montgomery, Tsion Yared, Katherine Jovanovic and Katarina Stevanovich, Pine Crest, girls’ cross country: Montgomery (18:22) defended her Class 2A state title and led a 1-6-13-18 finish with Yared, Jovanovic and Stevanovich to help the Panthers finish second at the state finals.

Caitlin McCluskey, Sheridan Hills, girls’ volleyball: McCluskey had 14 kills, eight points and eight digs to lead the Sharks over Divine Savior in the Class 2A regional finals.

Torrance Gibson, American Heritage, football : Gibson had two rushing touchdowns to lead the Patriots (9-1) over host Kathleen 33-13.

Clara Smiddy, South Florida HEAT: Smiddy won the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke at the Class 1A state finals.

Kimeko Bennett and Nikki Lyons, St. Thomas Aquinas, girls’ volleyball: Bennett had a match-high 14 kills and Lyons had 12 kills to lead the Raiders to a four-set victory over Atlantic in the Class 7A regional finals.

Jack Klumpp, North Broward, boys’ cross country: Klumpp finished a Broward-best fourth in a personal-best 15:57 at the Class 2A state finals.

Kent Haeffner, Pine Crest, boys’ swimming: Haeffner won the 500 freestyle and finished third in the 200 freestyle to lead the Panthers to second place at the Class 1A state Finals.

Ariana Garcia, St. Thomas Aquinas, girls’ golf: Garcia finished tied for 13th at 14-over-par to lead the Raiders to fourth place at the Class 3A state finals.

Katherine MacNeal, Cypress Bay, girls’ cross-country: MacNeal came in ranked No. 11 at the Class 4A state finals but upset the Class 4A field with a second-place finish in a personal-best 18:28.

Nico Medina, American Heritage, boys’ swimming: Medina won the 500-yard freestyle to lead the Patriots to the Class 2A state title

Emily Kopas, University School, girls’ swimming: Kopas won the 100 breaststroke and finished fourth in the 200 IM at the Class 1A state finals.
