The Miami Coral Reef boys’ cross-country team has been getting stronger late in the season.
On Friday at Larry and Penny Thompson Park, the Barracudas picked up a huge win edging the boys’ competition to win the Region 4-4A title.
They were led by Kurt Convey’s runner-up finish (16:01.17) that was less than three seconds behind Sunset’s Nick Diaz (15:58.72). Carlin Berryhill finished third and Carlos Lopez finished sixth.
On the girls’ side, St. Thomas Aquinas cruised to the championship led by Alexa Cruz’s victory in 18:59.23.
The Raiders finished ahead of Miami Ferguson by 36 points as Megan Schloss finished second behind Cruz and Brianna Rischar finished fifth.
On the boys’ side, Aquinas finished a Broward-best second 21 points behind Miami Coral Reef. Manuel Velasquez led the Raiders, finishing fourth.

Jordan Scarlett ran the ball 10 times for 100 yards and scored twice, and Sean White threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Suns (8-1) to the home victory at Nova. Sam Bruce also returned a punt for a touchdown.
•Champagnat Catholic 56, Highlands Christian 2:
Michael Fredrick led the Lions (9-0) to the road win with nine carries for 146 yards and two touchdowns. Joseph Whisby finished with three rushing touchdowns and Kato Nelson completed eight of 12 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns.
Freshman Dylan Dibello threw for 108 yards and two touchdowns for Palmer Trinity but his efforts were not enough to sustain Ransom Everglades in a 55-22 rout on Thursday.
Palmer Trinity (1-8, 1-3 Gulf Atlantic) allowed 35 first-half points and was never fully capable of stopping the offensive surge of the Raiders (3-7, 2-5 Southeastern).
Blake Miller and Alberto Parra combined for 188 yards rushing for the Falcons.
The Miami Springs girls’ soccer team continued its perfect start to the season with a 9-0 win over Miami Central on Friday.
Debbie Yance led the way for the Golden Hawks with two goals and an assist. Diana Haro and Natessa Perera each added a goal while Heissel Mayor registered three assists for Miami Springs.
With the win, the Golden Hawks improve to 3-0.
