Chris Lammons and his Plantation teammates have a chance to secure the District 15-7A championship by beating St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday.
On the other hand, Khairi Clark and Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (1-7) are just coming off of their first win of the season against Inlet Grove last Friday.
Despite the parity the two see on the high school level, they remain steadfast in their oral commitments to the University of Florida, despite the Gators’ struggles this season.
Lammons and Clark were presented with their U.S. Army All-Americans jerseys on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, accepting an invitation to play in one of high school football’s most-heralded games to be played Jan. 4 in San Antonio.
Never miss a local story.
“I was just very appreciative of everything,” Lammons said. “That was always one of my goals going into high school, seeing all the big names going there and you’re just like, ‘Oh yea, that’s what I’m going to do my senior year.’ Just accomplishing that goal feels good.”
Added Clark: “It’s something I always grew up wanting to be a part of, and it’s such an emotional experience [knowing] that I’m able to be a part of it.”
Florida (4-3) has struggled this season with what coach Will Muschamp has called an “inept” offense, and the losses of several key starters to season-ending injuries, including quarterback Jeff Driskel (broken fibula) and defensive tackle Dominique Easley (torn ACL).
Lammons, who plays quarterback for Plantation (7-1), but will play cornerback for the Gators, committed to UF in August because of his relationship with defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson.
Lammons said he hasn’t needed any talks with Robinson or his fellow UF commits and friends from the South Florida Express travel team, Quincy Wilson (Davie University School CB) and Ermon Lane (Homestead WR) in regards to UF’s down season.
“Losing games just makes you want to get better,” Lammons said. “Next year is going to be different with us coming in there.”
As for Clark, the Florida coaching staff has been telling him he “could be the guy to clog the middle” and stop the run like Easley.
“They tell me sometimes they need me in the game right now,” said Clark, who has been committed to the Gators since June, and will take his official visit to UF in December.
“I’m just excited to go out there next year and earn my spot as a true freshman,” Clark said.
The Archbishop McCarthy girls’ soccer team started its season off with a win at home Tuesday after defeating Somerset 8-0.
Carissa Sanchez and Yari Bradfield each scored three goals for the Mavericks, while Adrianna Cabeza and Madison St. Philip added one goal each in the rout. Tyra Cannady and Jenny Corzo combined for a shutout in goal.
The Mavericks (1-0), will travel to University School on Thursday to take on the Suns.
The Suns faced off against district-rival Pine Crest to open up their season. The competitive matchup ended in a 2-2 draw.
Julia Grosso and Madiya Harriott scored for University.
