Miramar (9-0, 5-0) clinched District 12-8A and beat the team that eliminated it in the playoffs a year ago, trouncing host Cypress Bay (4-4, 3-2) on Friday.
Ryan Samuels accounted for three of the Patriots’ six takeaways to lead Miramar’s “Dark Side” defense that kept the Lightning from scoring offensively. Samuels intercepted a pass and recovered two fumbles — one he returned for a 19-yard touchdown.
“It’s all from coach [Damon] Cogdell’s drills, the linebacker drills,” said Samuels, a senior currently receiving interest from Purdue, Indiana and Ball State. “He has always swarming, always moving, on the run.”
Miramar (9-0, 5-0) jumped on Cypress Bay early with two touchdown passes from Nick Jeanty, including a 57-yard pass to Kwasim West on the Patriots’ first offensive play. Jeanty, splitting time at quarterback with Gerald Hawkins, later connected with Kevin Purlett for a 19-yard score.
Cypress Bay (4-4, 3-2) was eliminated from playoff contention Friday after it ended Miramar’s season in 2012 with a 34-14 regional semifinal win. Flanagan clinched the district’s runner-up spot with the Lightning loss, giving the Falcons their first playoff appearance in school history.
