For the second consecutive year it was a sweep for St. Thomas Aquinas at the BCAA swimming and diving championships Saturday at Plantation Aquatic Complex.
The girls’ team took seven of the 12 events, while the boys’ team notched four. The Raiders placed 14th and fifth in the Class 3A girls’ and boys’ competition, respectively, in 2012.
“We have a lot of team spirit and push each other to swim well,” Aquinas senior Mia Fiorenzi said. “It’s fun to win the relays and push hard. Everybody kind of gets excited and tries their best every time.”
Five swimmers captured two individual titles apiece.
Fiorenzi won both the 50-yard freestyle (24.55) and 100-yard butterfly (57.78). Kyle Desrosiers took titles in the 200 free (1:45.91) and 500 freestyle (4:48.89) for the Raiders.
Cypress Bay’s Emma Lincoln just missed the 200 freestyle record. She finished with a season-best time of 1:52.66, .29 slower than Ileana Lucos in 2006.
Lincoln, who has committed to Tulane, also won the 100 freestyle in 52.33.
“I’m happy where I am,” Lincoln said. “I’m feeling really good. It’s a nice confidence booster to get an actual meet to see where you are. You get a good feeling because you’re not doubting yourself going into future meets.”
Fort Lauderdale’s Raphael Marcoux recorded the fastest 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle times in BCAA history. He finished the 50 in 21.36, topping Ricardo Barbosa’s 21.40 mark in 2005. In the 100 it was a 46.77, besting Justin Grigull’s 47.51 in 2009.
Taravella’s Ilya Evdokimov topped the previous BCAA record with a 57.38 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Earlier in the finals he earned first in the 100 fly with a 51.82.
Pine Crest and American Heritage did not compete in the meet since they are not BCAA-member schools.
District meets will take place this week leading up to the FHSAA state championships Nov. 8-9 and 15-16 at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart.
