Nelson, Salmon lead Champagnat past Chaminade, to seventh consecutive win

Quarterback Kato Nelson found Darnell Salmon for two passing touchdowns, and Champagnat racked up seven sacks in spoiling the homecoming for Chaminade-Madonna (0-5).

Quarterback Kato Nelson found Darnell Salmon for two passing touchdowns, and Champagnat racked up seven sacks in spoiling the homecoming for Chaminade-Madonna (0-5).

The Lions’ 7-0 start is the best in school history.

“This win means everything,” Champagnat coach Mike Tunsil said. “Last year, we were on the other side of the scoreboard when they beat us like 40-7. The guys worked really hard, and it was special for us.”

Chaminade-Madonna held onto a first-quarter lead before Nelson found Salomon for the first time on a 5-yard pass. Andre Funchess then put Chaminade-Madonna up again with a 12 yard run, which would prove to be the Lions’ last points.

Champagnat quickly quieted the homecoming crowd as a Nelson scoring run tied the game at 14-14 in the fourth quarter. The visiting Lions would go onto score 28 unanswered points in the victory.

Nelson completed 9 of 12 passes for 67 yards and had three total scores. Franklin Labady set the tone on the ground with 103 rushing yards and a touchdown.

“We won 74-0 last week, so we are getting there,” Tunsil said. “We still have three more games and two more district games, so the season is not over. We have a lot of things to accomplish. It takes time to grow. You can’t build anything over night.”

Melliek Jackson capped off the route with a 65-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. Michael Fredrick and Travorie McRae each had two sacks in the victory.

Kharri Clark had a forced fumble and a sack in the loss. Chaminade-Madonna quarterback Marcelo Rodriguez was 6-of-10 for 59 passing yards.
