Once the competitive juices kicked in for Pines Charter’s dynamic duo of Carlos Penaranda and Andrew Iglesias at the Cardinal Gibbons Invitational on Friday, the pre-race strategy to play the role of “rabbits” for the Jaguars’ four and five runners went out the window.
Penaranda and Iglesias each unleashed a devastating kick with a half mile left that helped Penaranda break away from Calvary Christian’s Joel Lacy for the victory and helped Iglesias storm back from a 200-meter deficit for a thrilling second-place finish at Mills Pond Park.
“The guy [Lacy] next to me, he kept on trying to fight, but I noticed he was breathing heavy and early on he was surging a lot,” Penaranda said. “After a so-so time, I noticed he wasn’t surging anymore so I decided that was the time for me to go, so with a half mile left I just took off.”
That superior foot speed on a fast course brought Penaranda home in a personal-best 15:56. Iglesias seemed destined for third place with a mile left but surged past Lacy with a late rally and finished second in 16:04. The frenetic finish left Lacy visibly spent as he stumbled across the finish line in a personal-best 16:05.
“Going into the race we were trying to pace our four and five guys to get a good time for the FSU race next week,” Iglesias said. “We were trying to save it up. We just got caught up. In that last mile, I just had to catch that guy [Lacy].”
Daniel Peranda finished sixth in 16:30 to help the Jaguars claim the boys’ team title.
The inaugural Gibbons Invitational was deemed a rousing success after drawing 30 of the top programs in the state and becoming the lone Invitational in South Florida run under the lights.
Archbishop McCarthy junior Sara Bowden, who has overcome the pre-race jitters that hampered her as a freshman and sophomore, cruised to her first invitational title in 20:13. Bowden assumed control from the 1 1/2-mile mark and was never challenged.
The South Florida HEAT girls’ team continued its rise by claiming the girls’ team title behind a 2-3-4 finish behind Jenna Evans (20:20), Carolyn Shields (20:30) and Abigail Serda.
