Montgomery headlines hopeful runners

Broward’s elite cross-country runners — led by Pine Crest’s reigning Class 2A state champion Julia Montgomery, Pines Charter’s Andrew Iglesias, Coral Glades’ Anthony Deleva and St. Thomas Aquinas’ Manuel Velasquez and Alexa Cruz — will vie for the No. 1 title in Florida at the Flrunners.com Race of Champions on Saturday in Titusville.

Unlike the state meet which features different classifications running at different times, the Race of Champions gives no perceived advantage with the best from each classification running at the same time on the Chain of Lakes Park course.

For Montgomery, in particular, The Race of Champions will always hold special milestone in her career after posting a personal-best 17:52 for a third-place finish last season.

“I’m really excited and nervous about going back to flrunners,” Montgomery said. “I’m still debating or not if the 17:52 was real. It would be awesome to go back there and drop my time again. There will be some really great runners to push me.”

That front running pack includes Cruz, who is looking to even the score after losing to Montgomery in the stars’ first head-to-head dual at the Fort Lauderdale City Championships on Sept.10.
