Keyed by Jennifer Oramas and 6-2 defensive stalwart Mikiah Harrigan, Flanagan came up with the gut-check plays necessary to rally past archrival South Broward 38-36 at the BCAA Big8 Girls’ Basketball Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday.
Oramas hit a deep three-pointer to forge a 36-36 tie with 1:42 left and then fed Harrigan for the game-winning floater with 1:07 left to earn a berth in Friday’s semifinals at South Plantation against the Nova-Deerfield Beach winner.
“This is a huge win,” Oramas said. “It is the first time beating South Broward in two years. We had lost to them four times in a row. In the end we had some turnovers but kept our composure.
“We will start getting some more respect as we beat more good teams.”
Never miss a local story.
Timely plays from Oramas (10 points) and Harrigan (13 points, seven rebounds, five steals) helped the Falcons stave off a late spurt from Bulldogs’ forward Shante Walker, who finished with a game-high 19 points.
Walker took matters into her own hands down the stretch, hitting two free throws, deflecting a Falcons’ pass to teammate Tocaria Burgess and then powering in for a layup to put the Bulldogs up 36-33 with 2:10 left.
Harrigan, however, came up with perhaps her biggest defensive stop when her outstretched arms forced Walker to miss a bank shot attempt, which would have tied the score at 38 with 44 seconds left.
Piper earned the right to face tournament favorite Dillard at 8 p.m. Friday with a 56-54 upset of District 14-7A power Northeast. The Hurricanes led 54-53 with nine seconds left when Piper 6-1 freshman Britnee Gabriel converted a putback off an offensive rebound while being fouled.
Gabriel missed the ensuing free throw attempt, but Troi Grant sealed the victory when she followed up her steal by hitting one of two free throws.
