Wegmann, Woulfe go unbeaten, but North team captures Florida Cup

dneal@MiamiHerald.com

Fort Lauderdale's Peter Wegmann and Rick Woulfe each went undefeated in matches over the two days of the Florida Cup, but the South team still lost to the North 16 ½-15 ½ at The Country Club of Ocala last week.

The Florida Cup features 16 of the top amateurs from North Florida facing 16 of their counterparts from the southern part of the state in a Ryder Cup-type format. The North took a 5 ½-2 ½ lead in four-ball match play, then held on as the South won the alternate shot matches 4 ½-3 ½ and the singles matches 8 ½-7 ½. In his singles match, Woulfe overcame club champion Berger Warner's home course advantage to win 3 and 2.

Other Dade or Broward golfers on the South team were Fort Lauderdale's Ryan Abbate, David Obst, James Weick and Steve Sim; Miami's Jeronimo Esteve and Jose Novo; Plantation's Bob Ethridge; and Southwest Ranches' John Wegmann.

BEAR'S CLUB WIN

The Bear's Club team won the Florida Women's State Golf Association Club Team Championship last weekend at Daytona Beach's LPGA International.

The 288 shot by Ann Candido, Bonnie Grizzard, Donna Pla and Susan Levin won the gross score title by six shots over the 294 shot by the Palm Beach Polo team of Diane Armet, Barbara Magie, Meredith Wolf and Ginny Orthwein.

MINOR LEAGUE TOUR

The three Minor League Golf Tour events of the week saw a playoff and some home cooking.

Tuesday, Justin Hicks shot a 65 to edge Dan McCarthy of Syracuse, N.Y., and Mike Adamson of Waynesburg, Pa., by a shot at The Links at Madison Green. Hicks owns a home near the 17th hole of the Royal Palm Beach course.

Jupiter's Sandro Piaget finished ninth in that event, but the day before, at Jupiter's Abacoa Golf Club, Piaget built a cushion just big enough for him to land with a one-shot win over Brett Bergeron of LaPlace, La. After 11 holes, Piaget was at 7-under, but after bogeying his last four holes, he finished with a 5-under 67. Had Bergeron not also bogeyed No. 18, there would have been a playoff for the second consecutive event.

Last Friday, Boynton Beach's Braden List beat Argentina's Manuel Relancio in a playoff at Ocean Breeze Golf Club in Boca Raton when he birdied the first extra hole. Both List and Relancio had shot 4-under 68s, List out and back in 34 and Relancio firing a 37 on the back nine. Aventura's Warren Jurkowitz shot a 70 and finished in a four-way tie for fifth.
