Texans Release O'Neal, Harrison Among 22 Cuts

The Sports Network

Veteran cornerback Deltha O'Neal and part-time 2008 starting safety Brandon Harrison were among 22 players released by the Houston Texans on Saturday, as the team pared its roster to 53 players per NFL roster rules.

O'Neal, a former first-round draft choice and two-time Pro Bowler who has played in 132 games as a member of the Broncos (2000-03), Bengals (2004-07), and Patriots (2008) since entering the league, had signed with the Texans on Aug. 6th but the 32-year-old did not make enough of an impression to stick.

Harrison, a fifth-round draft choice of the Texans who opened six games a year ago, making 30 tackles, was the only 2008 starter named on the final cut-down list. The former Stanford standout played in 15 contests a year ago.

Also released on Saturday were quarterback Alex Brink, linebacker Khary Campbell, cornerback A.J. Davis, linebacker Buster Davis, fullback Jonathan Evans, running back Arian Foster, tight end Clark Harris, center Brett Helms, defensive end Tim Jamison, wide receiver Darnell Jenkins, guard Adrian Jones, defensive tackle Josh Leonard, defensive end Jesse Nading, cornerback Mark Parson, cornerback Matteral Richardson, wide receiver Mark Simmons, tackle Adam Stenavich, tackle Brandon Torrey, linebacker Toddrick Verdell, and tackle Cliff Washburn.

Notables on that list included Brink, the 2008 seventh-round draft choice; Buster Davis, who was attempting to make the team after playing in six games with the Colts a year ago; Jones, a former starter with the Jets and Chiefs, and Nading, who appeared in six games with Houston a year ago.

The Texans will open their regular season on Sept. 13th, when they play host to the New York Jets.
