Although not serious enough to keep cornerback Vontae Davis from walking on his own, the Dolphins' first-round draft pick sustained an injury to his left knee during the second quarter that sidelined him for the rest of Thursday night's game.

Davis, with his knee wrapped in ice, walked with a considerable limp while flanked by two trainers as he left for the locker room with a few minutes remaining in the first half.

He stood on the sideline for the final two quarters, no longer wearing shoulder pads, while continually bending his leg as if to test the soreness. Fortunately for Davis, the Dolphins will have 10 days before the start of the regular season to get him healed.

His general appearance -- especially his ability to walk around on his own -- was certainly cause for cautious optimism. Aside from Davis' knee injury, the Dolphins escaped the preseason with limited health concerns.

Wide receiver Chris Williams and fullback Joe Kowalewski were the only other players to sustain injuries during camp, and both were waived/injured after getting hurt.

Of course, that doesn't include the most significant absence of camp, a superlative that goes to linebacker Matt Roth. Roth has now officially missed the entire training camp, making him a likely candidate for the physically-unable-to-perform list, which means he won't have a shot at playing again until after the sixth week of the season.

The team's general good fortune when it comes to injuries is a continuation of a trend that lasted through much of last season, as well. Coach Tony Sparano has long said the team's offseason training regimen deserves some of the credit for the good health.

And the longer the team maintains an injury-free roster, the more it seems this trend is more a matter of preparation than it is about luck.

ROSTER CUTS LOOM

With all four exhibition games completed, the Dolphins now must spend the next day deciding how to trim their roster down by 13 players. Currently with 66 players, the Dolphins must get down to 53 by 4 p.m. Saturday. Roth is probably one of those 13, because he is likely to be put on PUP.

The most significant names to watch are: wide receiver Brandon London; running back Lex Hilliard; tight ends John Nalbone and Joey Haynos; nose tackles Rodrique Wright and Ryan Baker; and linebacker William Kershawn.

GOOD SIGN ON SACKS

Sure, Miami's ability to pile up eight sacks might have been partly the result of Saints backup quarterback Joey Harrington's inability to escape pressure. It is nonetheless an optimistic sign when it comes to the Dolphins' depth at linebacker.

Linebacker Charlie Anderson, who backs up Joey Porter on the weak side, had his best game of the preseason, often applying pressure and having four tackles and two nice sacks.

Tony McDaniel also had two sacks, and Reggie Torbor added another. Lionel Dotson also added one in the fourth quarter.

RICKY TO WED

The life and times of running back Ricky Williams will add a new chapter this weekend. Williams will be marrying his longtime girlfriend, Kristin Barnes, in South Florida. Williams, who signed a one-year contract this offseason, maintained this week that he plans to play through 2010 before retiring.
