Two Marlins coaches decide to leave

The number of Marlins coaches that will not return next season doubled, from two to four, on Friday when the team announced that third base/outfield coach Bo Porter and bullpen coach Steve Foster declined contract offers for 2010.

The team announced Tuesday that pitching coach Mark Wiley and first base/infield coach Andy Fox would not be retained in those jobs but would be offered other positions in the organization.

Three coaches accepted offers to return on Fredi Gonzalez's staff: bench coach Carlos Tosca, hitting coach Jim Presley and bullpen coordinator Pierre Arsenault.

Also Friday, the Marlins released reliever Scott Proctor, who signed with Florida as a free agent last winter but did not pitch this season because of an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery in May. The Marlins also released reliever David Davidson, who gave up five runs in one inning in his only appearance.

MARTINEZ GETS CALL

Pedro Martinez is getting the ball and the call in another big game.

Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel chose the aging right-hander over J.A. Happ and Joe Blanton, who made appearances out of the bullpen Thursday, to face the Colorado Rockies in Game 3 of their NL playoff series Saturday night in Denver.

The best-of-5 series is tied at one game each.

Martinez is 6-2 with a 3.40 ERA in the postseason, and Manuel said he likes his history in cold weather, too. The forecast for Game 3 calls for temperatures dipping into the 20s with snow flurries.

ELSEWHERE

Diamondbacks: Arizona acquired infielder Tony Abreu, 24, from the Dodgers to complete a trade that sent pitcher Jon Garland to Los Angeles.

Blue Jays: New general manager Alex Anthopoulos shook up his front office. Former assistant general manager Tony LaCava was hired as director of player personnel, Charlie Wilson was named director of minor-league operations and former Double A manager Doug Davis became minor-league field coordinator.

Tigers: First base and outfield coach Andy Van Slyke will not be returning to Detroit. The former Pittsburgh Pirates star had been part of manager Jim Leyland's coaching staff for four seasons.
