Coach Randy Shannon said junior tailback Javarris James was more active in practice Wednesday but stopped short of saying James would play Saturday against Central Florida.

''He went a little bit more [Wednesday],'' Shannon said. ``But you don't know until game time on his situation.''

James returned to practice this week after missing the past three games because of a high ankle sprain. Before he was injured during a 26-3 loss at Florida on Sept. 6, James was averaging 5.5 yards a carry.

• Shannon said freshman wide receiver Thearon Collier, who missed last week's game because of a chest injury, ''did a lot more'' in practice Wednesday and is expected to play Saturday. Collier will look to pick up where he left off -- averaging 12.6 yards a catch in what has been an impressive start to his collegiate career.

Miami will release its pregame injury report Thursday.

• The Hurricanes worked primarily on third-down defense and third-down offense Wednesday, Shannon said.
