Fund-raiser a success for UM basketball

The University of Miami men's basketball team performed on a different kind of hardwood Saturday at BasketBowl, a fund-raiser at Lucky Strike Lanes in Miami Beach.
Even though the goal was to raise money for the basketball program and give fans a chance to interact with the team, personal bragging rights still were on the line.
''Everybody keeps asking me about my bowling; all I'm going to say is come to my lane and look at my score when it's all done,'' said senior guard Jack McClinton, an AllAtlantic Coast Conference selection last season. ``Actually, I'm average, but you've got to be confident.''
The event drew about 200 guests, sold out all of Lucky Strike's lanes and raised about $80,000.
Each lane was assigned a player or coach to bowl with the fans.
And although McClinton might be the guy with the sweet jump shot, forward Cyrus McGowan was the rumored Hurricane to watch in the lanes.
Hurricanes coach Frank Haith wasn't nearly as optimistic about his own skills.
'I know I'm not a good bowler because I haven't picked up a ball in 20 years, but my son can take my spot,' Haith said.
Although Saturday was about fun, talk soon will turn back to what the Hurricanes can accomplish on the basketball court after last season, which included a victory against Duke and a second-round NCAA Tournament appearance.
''I think we're talented enough to finish in the upper half of the league,'' Haith said. ``Where does that put us? If you're in the upper half of this league, I think you're good enough to play in the NCAA Tournament.''
