UM's Bailey hurt during training

University of Miami defensive end Allen Bailey, one of the most impressive Canes players during spring practice, tore a pectoral muscle while lifting weights on Monday, canesport.com reported Tuesday night.

A UM representative confirmed the injury and said Bailey plans to undergo surgery this week. The representative said Bailey told teammates he expects to be back for the start of the season.

The typical rehabilitation timetable for such an injury is three to four months, canesport.com said, but could be accelerated with an athlete of Bailey's ability.

Bailey, who will be a sophomore this fall, agreed to move from linebacker to defensive end this spring and had emerged as a front-runner to start.

If Bailey misses the start of the season, Courtney Harris and Adewale Ojomo would be candidates to start at defensive end opposite Eric Moncur.
