University of Miami freshman Chris Hernandez was named Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday -- three days after Hernandez gave up two hits and struck out 11 in eight innings during UM's 1-0 shutout of No. 16 Virginia.
Hernandez, a Miami native, struck out eight of the first 11 batters he faced and retired 11 of the final 13 batters. He walked just one in the game. The first Hurricane to earn the league's weekly pitching honor this season, the lefty improved to 7-0 on the season with a 2.77 ERA.
Miami's Blake Tekotte, an outfielder, and first baseman Yonder Alonso have earned the past two ACC Player of the Week honors.
UM (36-5, 20-2 ACC) retained its No. 1 ranking in the Baseball America, USA Today/ESPN coaches and Collegiate Baseball polls.
The Canes host Saint Mary's (Calif.) for three nonconference weekend games at Mark Light Field beginning Friday.
