UM QBs know one good day won't clinch start
The Hurricanes' quarterback hopefuls are aiming to bring their best game every day between now and the team's Aug. 28 opener against Charleston Southern.

Jacory Harris could throw a couple of touchdowns, run for a couple more and add a game-saving tackle for a nice touch.
Robert Marve could throw for three and run for three -- in the first half.
And Cannon Smith could throw, run, score at will and cure a deadly disease during timeouts.
But nothing these quarterbacks do Saturday in the University of Miami's spring game and final practice at Fort Lauderdale's Lockhart Stadium will earn them the starting job in the fall.
''It's another day,'' UM offensive coordinator Patrick Nix said.
And if somebody does really, really well, doesn't that mean anything more?
''No, not at all,'' Nix said. ``It means he had a good day, one good day out of 15. We'll see how it stacks up to the rest of them. If he has 14 bad and one good, I'll take the 14 good and one bad, myself.''
The decision of who will start as quarterback in the Aug. 28 opener against Charleston Southern could come as late as a week before the game -- maybe even later, UM coach Randy Shannon said Tuesday.
''I'm going to wait,'' Shannon said, ``because a lot of things happen in the summertime.''
CanesFest will open its gates at Fort Lauderdale's Lockhart Stadium at 9 a.m., an hour before the scrimmage.
On Tuesday, as in the past few weeks, the quarterbacks seemed confident and upbeat, demonstrating solidarity while still showing their eagerness to stand out.
Marve, a redshirt freshman, was asked if he was fine with not knowing who starts until just before the game.
''That's the head man,'' he said. ``He makes the rules around here, so I'm cool with whatever he says. We're trying to win games here. We're not trying to find out who's this and who's that. We don't know any position right now.
``. . . You want to play to the best of your capabilities to show everyone what you've got, but you've got to understand the situation.
'. . . [We] definitely feel much more like a family. It's one thing running out here together or lifting weights, but it's another thing when you come out and buckle your chin strap and hit. We're starting to play as a group. It's the first time I've really seen the offensive-line and skill-position guys in the huddle kind of look each other in the eye, [like] `We've got this. Let's do this together. Let's fight together.' ''
Harris, a true freshman, believes his performance Saturday is ``very important.
''I want to showcase my skills and have my team surround me so they can make me better,'' he said. ``But at the same time, I want all of us to be good.''
Harris said he doesn't mind waiting through summer and fall to find out who starts. ''That's more time for us to compete,'' he said. ``The person that the team revolves around the most, whoever the team has a great chemistry with, I think that's who will be the starter.''
Smith, the other true freshman, said his goal for Saturday is to ''operate a smooth offense and put on points.'' He conceded sometimes he's disappointed that he might not get as many snaps, but said, ``When we get in, you just have to make the most of your opportunities.''
Shannon said the NCAA has approved LB Glenn Cook's sixth year of eligibility after a foot injury sidelined him last season. . . . Daniel Adderley has been switched from WR to TE.
