University of Miami football coach Randy Shannon shed more light on the quarterback situation Thursday morning after practice, talked a bit about the final scrimmage's standout and gave an injury update.

During WQAM's Hurricane Hotline show Wednesday night, Shannon said he had ``just received three transfers trying to transfer to the University of Miami. It's an opportunity that players see at [UM], that we're going to give guys a chance to play. We want competitive young men to come in and compete.''

On Thursday morning, Shannon was asked about the radio comment and if he expected quarterbacks to be joining the team soon.

``No, no, no, no, no,'' Shannon replied. ``It's like anything. You get a lot of kids that want to transfer in and stuff like that. We're solid for what we're going to do this year. We're recruiting quarterbacks. I can't get into recruiting. We have guys that we want and stuff like that [who] have a lot of interest in us. And that's all we're going to worry about that.''

He also once again gave high praise to third-year sophomore running back Lee Chambers, who apparently had his second consecutive outstanding scrimmage performance Tuesday.

``Lee Chambers did a great job running and also playing special teams, just phenomenal on both sides. When you see a guy like that develop -- he's also coming back from the bowl game, [where] he performed [well]. And then he comes back off of injury in spring football, that was something real pleasing to see him come back like the way he did.''

Shannon said Chambers had ``tough, hard runs,'' and made a couple of tackles on special teams and had key blocks on special teams.'' Shannon said Chambers also had a scrimmage touchdown run.

ANOTHER LINEMAN DOWN

Add defensive end Dyron Dye to other ailing ends Adewale Ojomo, Eric Moncur and Gavin Hardin. True freshman Dye is ``nicked up,'' Shannon said Thursday. He did not practice.

``I'll put it to you this way: In the scrimmage that we had two weeks ago, he got a little banged up. He practiced and practiced and then now got really, really sore. So now we've got to pull him off and the doctor is going to tell us if he can come back or not, or what they have to do.

``He did all the things we wanted him to do. But it's like anything, injuries flare up two or three days later. So, it's one of those injuries that happened and we'll figure out in the next couple of days what he can do.''

Also, don't expect to see much of Moncur in the season opener at Florida State -- if at all. Shannon said Moncur's doctor said he should be encouraged to participate, but the senior defensive end is still being cautious.

``You know what, I made that mistake last year. The doctors say push him, he should be 80 percent, 85 percent for Florida State -- but I don't know. You know, if he can come back, great, but like I said before, he has to practice a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday practice of Florida State [week] for us to even think of him playing.''

Shannon clarified: ``Let me see, we play on Sept. 7. He has to go that Thursday, Friday and Saturday before Florida State if he has any shot of playing. If he doesn't go those days, he's not playing.''

Does Shannon expect that? ``I don't know. He's walking around with his shoulder pads. You don't know.''

Receiver Leonard Hankerson was back practicing Thursday, Shannon said. ``He flew around and had on a green jersey -- don't hit him. Ran all his routes, did conditioning, went through every drill, every 7-on-7, every blitz drill, every team.''

Center A.J. Trump practiced Thursday.
