Florida Gators' defense rules the day

GAINESVILLE -- For the starters on No. 1 Florida's defense, it was more like Senior Half than Senior Day.

The Gators turned in such a dominant first half during their 37-10 win against Florida State that their defensive starters spent little time on the field after the midway point.

Backups did most of the work after that, giving the regulars a chance to rest up for the Southeastern Conference championship showdown with Alabama next Saturday.

``We knew it was going to be a really emotional game, and we just didn't want to let that emotion get us unfocused from the job at hand, which was winning the football game and beating Florida State,'' UF linebacker Ryan Stamper said. ``We jumped on them fast and got a lot of guys out of the ballgame so we could get ready for this week.''

Florida gave up just 55 yards, zero points, forced four punts and made an interception in the first half.

It was a perfect send-off for the seniors on one of the nation's best defenses, which expected to put the clamps on an FSU offense that averaged 434 yards and 31 points per game before Saturday.

``To be honest, I did [expect a blowout],'' Stamper said. ``I'm not going to lie and say I didn't. Third start of [FSU quarterback E.J. Manuel's] career, coming into The Swamp with the experienced defense we have. We just knew we would be able to stop them.''

It was the last home game for Stamper, defensive linemen Jermaine Cunningham and Troy Epps, cornerbacks Wondy Pierre-Louis and Markihe Anderson, and linebackers Brandon Spikes and Dustin Doe.

Safety Dorian Munroe, a Miami Coral Reef High product, did not participate in Senior Day ceremonies.

He said after the game that he plans to apply for a sixth year of eligibility after missing two seasons in a row with knee injuries.

GOODBYE FOR JUNIORS?

The game might also have been the last for a host of talented juniors.

Defensive end Carlos Dunlap and cornerback Joe Haden are highly-rated NFL Draft prospects, and tight end Aaron Hernandez, safety Major Wright and offensive linemen Mike and Maurkice Pouncey will also have to make decisions on their futures at season's end.

``I definitely took it all in a lot more,'' said Haden, who had an interception. ``I stayed in the locker room and kept my pads on for a little longer and did a lap after the game. Just in case this was my last game, I wanted to make sure I went out doing stuff that I wanted to do.''

Haden's coach, defensive coordinator Charlie Strong, might also have had his final game at The Swamp. Strong's name will be attached to many coaching vacancies this offseason, but he said after the game that he was ignoring the talk and focusing on Alabama.

RECRUITS SHOW UP IN DROVES

The section reserved for visiting recruits in the south end zone was packed with talent. Eight players listed by Scout.com as five-star recruits were scheduled for visits, and Stamper feels confident that the Gators put on enough of a show to warrant some commitments.

``I personally feel that guys who are big-time recruits and don't want to come to Florida, I think they're scared of competition,'' Stamper said. ``Why wouldn't you want to come to a school that's winning championships, where coaches care about you, you learn and everything goes on makes you a better man on and off the field?''

Miramar High receiver Ivan McCartney was in attendance, and he said he will wait until National Signing Day to make his college decision.
